Wer? Was? Wann? Wo? Wie? Warum?

Die Galerie WestLicht im 7. Wiener Bezirk beherbergt derzeit bereits zum 9. Mal in Folge die World Presse Photo Exhibition. Seit 1955 werden beim World Press Photo Contest die weltbeisten Pressefotografien gekürt. Dieses Jahr bewarben sich 5.847 Fotografen aus 128 Ländern bei der Worls Press Photo Foundation um den begehrten Titel. 101.960 Aufnahmen wurden von der internationalen Jury gesichtet, die Gewinner au den Rubriken Politik, Sport, Kultur, Umwelt und Wissenschaft werden nun in einer Wanderausstellung gezeigt. Bis zum 26. November sind die weltbesten Pressefotos noch im WestLicht zu sehen. Die 6,50€ (für Studenten 4€) zahlen sich aus.

Platz 1: Klagende Frauen auf den Dächern Teherans

Eine Fotografie von Pietro Masturzo wurde heuer zum „World Press Photo of the Year 2009″ gekürt. Es zeigt Frauen, die sich in der Nacht nach der umstrittenen Wahl von Mahmoud Ahmadinedschad auf den Dächern versammelt haben, um ihren Protest zu schreiben. Ich bin verwundert, dass dieses Foto das Rennen gemacht hat. Heute habe ich viele schockierende Aufnahmen gesehen – Tierkadaver, Kinderleichen, verstümmelte Soldaten und Spuren von Massakern. Ich habe Außergewöhnliches gesehen, z. B. ein amerikanischer Soldat im Gefecht, untenrum nur mit einer patriotischen „I Love NY“-Boxershort bekleidet. Ich war erstaunt und geekelt, verwundert, schockiert und berührt, doch das Gewinnerbild hat mich kalt gelassen. Klar macht das Bild im Zusammenhang mit seiner Beschreibung  Sinn. In einem Land, wo es praktisch keine freie Meinung gibt, versammeln sich Frauen bei Nacht, um ihren Kummer von den Dächern zu schreien und Allah zu rufen. Doch das Foto an sich hat mich trotzdem nicht wahnsinnig angesprochen. Die Konkurrenz war vielleicht einfach zu stark?

Mein Favourit

Absolut faszinierend und einzigartig finde ich hingegen diese Momentaufnahme des ungarischen Fotografen Joe Petersburger. Er knipste den Eisvogel beim Fangen seiner Beute. Der Eisvogel hat sein drittes Augenlid geschlossen, damit das Auge beim Eintauchen ins Wasser nicht verletzt wird. Das dritte Augenlid ist jedoch lichtdurchlässig genug, damit der Eisvogel seine Beute, einen Fisch, auch unter Wasser nicht aus den Augen verliert. Der Vogel lässt Federn, das Wasser schlägt kleine Wellen, der Fisch muss dran glauben und der Kontrast zwischen blauem Himmel, dunkelgrünem Wald im Hintergrund und dem weißen Eisvogel auf Beutefang ist einzigartig. Joe Petersburger hat mit diesem Bild den Platz 1 in der Kategorie Naturaufnahmen gewonnen. Ich sag dazu nur – vogl frei!

Melanie came to Newcastle to study business, to improve her English, to make new friends and to try something different: pole dancing. For four weeks Melanie took lessons in this sexy dance style that more and more women in the United States, the United Kingdom and Western Europe are going crazy over.

Melanie’s dancing instructor Ellouise Hempstead, who is running her own dance troupe in Newcastle, noticed that for the past four years pole dancing has been a growing trend in the UK. “It is maybe more popular now in the way that the taboos that have been associated with it have subsided because of the all the celebrities that have gotten into it,” Ellouise said. “Now it is seen more as a fitness thing, which it has been since I started teaching it 6 years ago, but people always thought those kind of negative things whereas now [they think] ‘So-and-so does pole dancing, so I would like to try it too’.”

A sport for everyone?

According to Ellouise, every woman could learn how to pole dance, no matter how old, how tall, how trained or how slim she is. Usually her students are women between 20 and 30 years old, but her oldest student was 80 years old. “I have also taught guys sometimes,“ Ellouise said. “They are pretty good in general, because they have the strength that is necessary, but women make it look better.”

Melanie started dancing about ten years ago. She tried historical dances, hip hop and music video dancing, and she is used to dance in front of an audience, hence she has good coordination and a lot of self-confidence, which was necessary to try something new and extraordinary. “Of course you need self-confidence,“ Melanie said. “If you try something and it doesn’t work out, you make a fool of yourself in front of the others. But isn’t it like that everywhere in life?”

The pole dancing students have to practice a lot to look as elegant and graceful on the pole as their instructor Ellouise. “You need a lot of pressure to slide slowly down the pole, strength for the figures and coordination to entwine one leg around the pole and to straighten the other leg in the air,“ Melanie said.

„Wonderwoman“

There are three of them in one course, because there is only one pole in the middle of the room and the women have to rotate. A lesson consists of a warm-up, a repetition of old and the learning of new figures with interesting names like the “Carousel” or “Wonderwoman”, a cool-down and stretching – exactly like any other dance lesson.

Some of the moves look quite difficult and the students require several tries to get them right. They sometimes crash down on their knees and every once in a while Ellouise has to remind them that the pole is their friend.

After the lesson they are sweaty, their muscles are aching and they are exhausted – that’s why Melanie says that pole dancing is definitely a sport and not just a sexy cavorting around the pole. She compares it with apparatus gymnastics and her instructor Ellouise says that most of her students see pole dancing from a fitness point of view rather than an erotic one.

“One reason why Pole Dancing is so popular at the moment is that a lot of women want to do something where they don’t feel like exercising, so they prefer dancing to go to the gym,“ Ellouise said. „In the first instance they come here to have fun and make friends,“ she added.

Pole Dancing, Go-Go Dancing & Stripping

For Melanie, Pole Dancing is generally a hobby, but she could imagine doing it professionally: “I love all kinds of dancing and on one hand I could imagine dancing on a pole in a club like a Go-Go dancer, but on the other hand I think I am too small and not lithe and lanky enough. Also, I don’t want to wear 20-centimeter High Heels, because then I can’t dance the way I want to. However, I love to dance, I know how to use my body to attract attention and it works -  last week a guy in a club came up to me and asked: ‘Are you a professional stripper?’ and I answered: ‘No, I am a student, but thanks anyway’.”

Melanie sees the guy’s comment as a compliment to her dancing skills rather than as an affront, because she says that she would never take her clothes off. “I feel good when I dance, but stripping has little to do with dancing. Strippers are predominantly there to turn on men, whereas Go-Go dancers try to animate and motivate the people in a club to dance and celebrate,“ Melanie said. “Thus I could imagine dancing as a Go-Go girl but I would never strip.”

„Miss Pole Dance“

Melanie is also interested in Pole Dancing Competitions. According to the association “Miss Pole Dance” there have been 15 national Pole Dance events all over Britain in the last five years and every year there are “Miss Pole Dance UK Championships”, where the best pole dancers of the country compete against each other. These competitions are more about athleticism and artistry than about sex appeal, therefore nudity and stripping are strictly forbidden.

“If I get the chance to practice more often, to take an advanced course or private lessons in Pole Dancing and if I know a good routine by heart, I could imagine entering a pole dance competition,” Melanie said. To practice her pole dancing skills she intends to buy a pole for her home: “I think about purchasing my own pole to meet with friends for pole dance jam sessions and maybe a future boyfriend would profit from my own pole too…”

For the research project “Creative Graduates Creative Futures” 3,500 art, design, crafts and media graduates were asked about their working lives, income and satisfaction in work. Half of the respondents said they earn under £20,000, one third earns £15,000 or less, which is well below the average starting salary for a new graduate in the UK.

Almost half of those questioned practice portfolio working, which means that they combine two or more jobs to get working experience, and they still earn less than the average graduates. However, for most art graduates, the worth of creative work is irrelevant because the creative practice and quality of experience is more important than money.

Despite short-term and freelance contracts and despite earning less than average, three quarters of the questioned painters, fashion designers and other art graduates are happy and satisfied in their work.

“About two or three times a week a student comes to talk to me because he feels that he has been unfairly marked,” Adam White, Education Officer and Vice President of Northumbria’s Student’s Union said. To reduce the number of cases where marks are really unfair and to guarantee more equality, the campaign “Mark my Words Not my Name” wants to implement anonymous marking of exams.

What is anonymous marking?

“Anonymous marking means that when you submit any written assessment, you don’t put your name on your work, just your student number,” said Alison Jones, Vice President of Communications and Involvement at the Student’s Union. “That way, the lecturer marking your paper has no idea who you are and cannot make any prejudgements on your academic abilities.”

At the University of Northumbria the Law School and the School of Psychology and Sports have already introduced anonymous marking a few years ago, now the Student’s Union wants to get more schools within the university to employ this method of marking.

The Campaign

“We have already talked to the Vice Chancellor and to five Deans of the schools and everybody was largely supportive of the idea,” White said. “However, they want to see from us that this is actually what the students want, so we are proving this by going out and getting students to sign postcards with their Student ID number and the school they are in,” Jones said, adding: “We are aiming to collect 5,000 postcards and take them to the Vice Chancellor. We already have 2,500 signed.”

The campaign seems to be very successful and the Student’s Union expects to reach their target of 5,000 signed postcards soon, with the hope of appealing to the Vice Chancellor again about implementing anonymous marking at Northumbria. Other schools, such as the University of Leeds, have been successful in gaining anonymous marking, and their results show how effective it really is.

Experiences of the University of Leeds

Michael Gladstone, Education Officer at Leeds University, said that in 2006, when anonymous marking was brought in, the results for female students rose 12% and the results for black and minority ethic students rose 8%, which is quite a significant improvement over last year’s numbers. “Today anonymous marking is standard for all taught students at Leeds University, except for dissertations which necessitate the marker often knowing the student,” Gladstone said.

“The University of Leeds implemented anonymous marking because they had real problems with racism. (…) It is not like that at Northumbria,” White said. “Although we think that anonymous marking of exams is the only way to ensure that all students are equal and nobody is judged by their name on a paper but purely on their academic ability.”

Even though racism is not an issue at Northumbria University, and even though campaigns like “Mark my Words Not my Name” should not be necessary, anonymous marking of exams is an important step towards academic equality.

- Sowas kenn ich nicht.. Bisher zumindest. Ich war nie besonders stolz darauf, Österreicherin zu sein und gefiel mir gerne mal in der Rolle der Spanierin oder Italienerin, für die mich viele auf den ersten Blick hielten.

Ich war zwar immer glücklich und dankbar, in einem friedlichen Land wie Österreich leben zu dürfen und ich weiß die Schönheit unserer Natur zu schätzen – nix geht üwa de Pinzgaua Berge – aber ich war nie richtig stolz darauf, Österreicherin zu sein. Vielleicht auch weil dieses Wort in Österreich immer noch einen leicht bitteren Beigeschmack hat..

Doch seit ich jetzt hier in Newcastle die einzige Österreicherin unter 35.000 Studenten bin (und mindestens einmal pro Woche erklären muss, dass ich aus Austria und nicht aus Australia bin – Austria between Germany and Italy!) und täglich neue Leute aus aller Welt kennenlerne, die mir begeistert von ihrem Land erzählen, die stolz auf die Erfindungen aus ihrer Heimat sind und ihre Nationalfeiertage nicht nur schätzen, weil da frei ist, hab auch ich begonnen, mich mehr mit Österreich auseinanderzusetzen.

Eigentlich ein totaler Widerspruch – ich wollte doch Großbritannien kennenlernen, in diese Kultur hineinschnuppern, Erfahrungen sammeln und eines ganz bestimmt nicht – an Österreich denken. Die ersten zwei Monate hier in GB haben mir jedoch gezeigt, wie wenig ich über meine Heimat weiß und wenn mir ein Engländer mehr über Mozart erzählen kann als ich, dann ist das mehr als embarassing.

Neulich bekam ich von meiner spanischen Freundin Maria die Einladung zu einem Andalusien-Tag mit traditionellem andalusischem Frühstück (getoastetes Weißbrot mit Olivenöl, Salz und Schokolade – schräge Kombination) und Maria zeigte uns Fotos und Videos aus ihrer Heimat und hat sogar die spanische und andalusische Hymne gesungen. In dem Moment wurde mir klar, dass ich mit Hängen und Würgen die ersten Zeilen der österreichischen Nationalhymne zusammenbringe. Wie soll ich also ein neues Land entdecken und kennenlernen, wenn ich so wenig über meine Heimat weiß?

Wenn man jedoch mit Menschen aus sieben verschiedenen Nationen im gleichen Stockwerk lebt, stößt man zwangsläufig auf kulturelle Unterschiede. Klischees, Stereotype und Vorurteile liegen also auf der Hand und werden hier eifrig diskutiert.

I am from Austria

Österreich ist den meisten Briten und internationalen Studenten, die ich kennengelernt hab, zwar ein Begriff, aber niemand hat so wirklich eine Vorstellung von meinem Land. Die meisten assoziieren mit Österreich maximal Arnold Schwarzenegger, Mozart oder Wintersport.

Die Deutschen haben es nicht ganz so leicht

Meine spanische Freundin Maria kam beim Thema Deutschland sofort auf den zweiten Weltkrieg zu sprechen. Sie bat mich, etwas auf Deutsch zu sagen und meinte daraufhin „I only knew German from school where we watched films about Hitler and I thought German sounds always that aggressive.“ Das gab mir zu denken. Tatsache ist, dass wir Österreicher und Deutsche von Kindesbeinen an Englischunterricht haben und somit nicht nur etwas über die Sprache, sondern auch über die Kultur lernen. Im Gegensatz dazu lernt nur ein Bruchteil der Menschen in Großbritannien Deutsch.

Deutsch ist unbeliebt

Viel beliebter sind Französisch, Spanisch und neuerdings Ostsprachen… Ist die deutsche Sprache wirklich so grauenhaft? Sind Deutschland und Österreich generell uninteressant? Oder kratzt tatsächlich noch immer die Erinnerung an den Nationalsozialismus am Image der deutschen Sprache? Für die Briten ist die Nazi-Vergangenheit Deutschlands nämlich immer noch sehr präsent, Witze über Deutsche sind an der Tagesordnung. (Dass Adolf Hitler ursprünglich aus Österreich stammt, wissen die wenigsten…)

Alle sind anders, alle sind gleich

Doch generell (wo wir wieder bei Verallgemeinerung wären) sind die Briten sehr offen, kulturelle Vielfalt wird hier geschätzt (was in Österreich ja nicht immer der Fall ist) und gerade aufgrund dieser kulturellen Vielfalt wird hier Gleichberechtigung groß geschrieben. Egal woher man kommt, egal wie man aussieht, egal wie man heißt, egal ob Mann oder Frau, egal welche Religion, … Dieser Sinn für Gleichberechtigung fängt beim Lebenslauf ohne Foto an und hört bei Schuluniformen auf.

„Mark my words, not my name„

Eine Campagne der Students Union (vergleichbar mit unserer ÖH) ist mir da besonders aufgefallen. Unter dem Titel „Mark my words, not my name“ wirbt die Students Union dafür, dass wissenschaftliche Arbeiten an der University of Northumbria künftig beurteilt werden sollen, ohne dass der Professor den Namen des Studierenden erfährt. So würde nur die Leistung des Studierenden beurteilt, Faktoren wie Name, Alter, Geschlecht oder Herkunft des Studierenden hätten keinerlei Einfluss. Diese Form der Beurteilung wird schon  seit 1999 von Großbritanniens National Union of Students (NUS) gefordert und bereits erfolgreich an mehreren britischen Unis durchgeführt.

Vorbild für den Rest Europas?

„You are no real Beatles Fan“

Auf der vierstündigen Busfahrt nach Liverpool bekam ich von meinem Mitbewohner Steven, einem großen Beatles-Fan, eine Einführung in sämtliche Alben der vierköpfigen Band aus Liverpool. Außerdem erklärte er mir: „You are no real Beatles Fan unless you know the difference between John Lennon’s and Paul McCartney’s voice.“ Und siehe da – ich hörte, lernte, siegte und kam als „real Beatles-Fan“ in die Stadt der Liverpudlians.

Magical Mystery Tour

Nach der Besichtigung des Albert Dock und der Liverpool Cathedral, die mich durch ihre Kombination von Kunst und Kirche sehr beeindruckt hat, startete ich die Magical Mystery Tour – eine Beatles-Busfahrt quer durch Liverpool. Mit Beatles Songs im Ohr und einem witzigen Tourguide (mit leider sehr starkem Scouse-Dialekt) erkundete ich alle Geburtshäuser der Beatles, den Cavern Club, Strawberry Fields, uvm. Highlight der Tour war jedoch Penny Lane, wo der Bus extra hielt, weil ein Brite seiner Freundin vor dem Straßenschild einen Heiratsantrag machen wollte. (Sie hat ja gesagt.)

Das Penny Lane Straßenschild wird ca. einmal pro Woche von wildgewordenen Beatles Fans geklaut. Ich hab mich mit Anschauen begnügt..

Gateshead Millenium Bridge

Da bin ich jetzt, in einer neuen Stadt, in einem neuen Land, drüber übern Ärmelkanal. Alles ist fremd und anders, aber schön. Diese Aufnahme ist bei meinem ersten Abendspaziergang entlang der Tyne entstanden. Aber besser zurück an den Anfang…

Nach einem etwas unglücklichen Start (Flüge gecancelled, 7-Stunden-Busfahrt, Schneechaos wegen zwei Zentimetern Schnee) hab ich es doch noch auf die Insel geschafft. Genauer gesagt in den Nordosten, nach Newcastle upon Tyne. Früher als Industriestadt verschrien, hat sich Newcastle in den letzten Jahrzehnten gewandelt und gilt heute als „grünste Stadt im United Kingdom“ und als DIE Partymetropole im Nordosten Englands – ich kann beides bis jetzt nur bestätigen.

University Live

Mein Start  an der University of Northumbria verlief ungefähr genauso chaotisch wie die Anreise, da niemand wusste, dass es mich gibt und schon gar nicht, dass ich hier studieren will. Und die Briten sind ja noch viel bürokratischer als wir Österreicher – da halfen weder mein tolles Englisch noch mein Kleinmädchencharme – ich musste ungefähr zu 20 verschiedenen McIrgendwas und MrSoundso laufen, bis ich dann endlich Studentin an der University of Northumbria war.

Höflichkeit. Pünktlichkeit. Schlange stehen.

Diese drei Sachen kennzeichnen die Briten laut meinem Reiseführer. Stimmt – ich wurde noch nirgends so freundlich und höflich begrüßt. Egal ob im Studentenwohnheim, auf der Uni oder im Fitnessstudio – überall wurde ich mit einem „Nice to have you here!“ begrüßt.

Ganz anders als im verschneiten Österreich beginnen hier die Vorlesungen auch wirklich pünktlich und zu spät kommen geht als Student gar nicht.

Aja und die Briten stehen wirklich gerne „in the queue“, egal ob vor dem Bus oder im Supermarkt. Niemand drängelt – hat wohl auch mit der typisch britischen Höflichkeit zu tun.

Und wo wir schon bei Stereotypen sind – merkwürdigerweise trinkt hier keiner den berühmten britischen Klischee-Tee..

What can you expect of the highest grossing film of all time? The story of Avatar has been told a thousand times before, but James Cameron has told it in a new, flashy, 3D way.

Avatar is a not only a science-fiction movie, it is a money-maker, which brought in 1,859 milliard dollars within six weeks.

James Cameron had already written the script for Avatar in 1995, but he wanted to wait to produce it until the technology was advanced enough – and now it is. Avatar war released on December 18 in 2009 and it is a perfect example of what is visually and technically possible today.

Through 3D-glasses you feel like you are part of another world. Colours seem stronger and brighter than in a “normal” film, everything is moving and you are in the middle of it. 3D is one reason why Avatar fits into our zeitgeist, we want more than what’s come before.

Content vs. special effects

As complex as the visual effects are, as easy and simple is the plot:

Jake Sully, a paraplegic marine, is on a mission to a planet called Pandora, where he is expected to expel the native race, the Na’vi, to get their precious “unobtanium”. Using an avatar-body which looks like a Na’vi but has human and Na’vi DNA, Jake becomes part of the Na’vi society and assimilates to their culture.

Two worlds collide.

The technologically dominant human race on the one side, the naturally-inclined Na’vi on the other and Jake Sully in between. The content is not new, it is very similar to the Disney film Pocahontas from 1995. There are clichés and archetypes throughout the whole film:

We have a good-looking hero and a beautiful princess and of course they have to fall in love. We have a brainless warrior and a sniffling profiteer and of course they are working together. We have a zealous warrior who is untrusting of the newcomer, and of course he dies in battle.

Everything is taken from another science-fiction movie. Even the concept of making up a new language is not new – Liv Tyler spoke Elvish in The Lord of the Rings.

Human destruction of nature

But at least the movie shows a real problem of our presence: the human tendency to blacken everything that is green. Pandora is a different, perfect world where the Na’vi live in harmony with nature, they respect animals and plants and try to protect their home.

To go on a trip to colourful Pandora is a real contrast to the dirt and dust on our grey streets, where nobody cares about flowers or trees. Sometimes we need to flee into a dream world, and therein lays the real appeal of Cameron’s film. The plot may be factory-made, but its presentation excites that childish part of us all that craves a simple, colourful, confectionary treat.

However, beautiful imagery aside, the nagging irony of Avatar is that while it attempts to criticize the thirst for money and technological might, the film itself is a testament to both.

Punkt 1 – charmant

Das ach so freundliche und kompetente Personal ist nur so kompetent wie ihre Kommunikation und da hinkts gewaltig. Die ÖBB ist absolut nicht darauf eingestellt, dass ihre Gäste untereinander kommunizieren. So erzählt Gast A seinem Sitzpartner Gast B, dass der Zug bereits in Wien verspätet abgefahren ist, weil irgendeiner vergessen hat, den Strom anzuschalten. Gast B weiß also, wer an der Verspätung Schuld trägt. Dann kommt aber der Schaffner, zwickt die teuren Tickets und druckst wegen der Verspätung rum.

Gast wird allerdings auch zunehmend virtuell und damit hat die ÖBB sowieso und generell ein rießiges Problem. Die ÖBB weiß anscheinend nicht einmal, dass es sowas wie mobiles Internet gibt. Während gast im Internet recherchiert, ob der Anschlusszug die Verspätung abwartet, hat der Schaffner meist keine Ahnung. Dann heißt es „Ja klar wartet der Anschluss“ und dann steht gast irgendwo in der Pampa mit 1 Stunde Verspätung und darf eine Ewigkeit warten, bis  dann mal ein Regionalzug dahertuckert und einen mit weiterer Verspätung aufliest.

Soviel zum Thema Kompetenz und Personal. Das netteste Personal bringt gast nämlich nix, wenn es nix weiß. ÖBB – vernetze und informiere dich, dein Personal und vor allem deine Gäste!

Punkt 2 – umweltfreundlich

Na gut, aber hat die ÖBB denn nix anderes zu bieten? Da steig ich doch lieber ins Hybridauto! Wie wärs denn mal zur Abwechslung mit Pünktlichkeit, Schnelligkeit, Kompetenz, mehr Platz, funktionierender Klimaanlage und Steckdosen in den Abteilen?

Punkt 3 – billig

Die ach so günstigen Tickets.. Was bringen mir verbilligte Wochenendtickets in irgendeinen Tierpark, wenn ich den Zug unter der Woche brauche, um in die Arbeit zu kommen? Und was bringt mir ein 60-Euro-teures Sommerticket, mit dem ich den „ganzen“ Sommer gratis fahren kann, wenn der „ganze“ Sommer immer erst um 8.00 Uhr morgens beginnt (Wann beginnen die meisten Menschen zu arbeiten?!) und wenn die Karte vor meiner Haustür nicht gilt, weil da nämlich nicht mehr die ÖBB sondern die Salzburger Lokalbahn durch die Gegend schlängelt und die beiden Zuganbieter nicht an den Gast denken (ergo bei Angeboten, Ermäßigungen, Aktionen zusammenarbeiten) sondern sich gegenseitig bekriegen.

Punkt 4 – noch etwas

Und dann gibt’s da noch etwas, was mir auf dem Herzen liegt: Warum bin ich als Fahrgast, der weniger als 20 Euro pro Fahrt bezahlt, ein Gast zweiter Klasse? Warum bekomme ich kein Geld zurück, wenn mein Zug zwei Stunden Verspätung hat? Ich zahle 19,70 Euro – hab aber erst ab 20 Euro ein Recht auf Fahrgeldrückerstattung.. Da kümmert es niemanden, dass ich wegen der Verspätung Anschlüsse verpasse, Termine absagen muss und um noch weitere zwei Stunden meines Wochenendes beraubt werde.
